Teaching procedures

Step 1: Warming-up

1. Greetings.

2. Show a series of pictures of Dunhuang Grottoes, and ask them where it is. Then tell them that we usually see the bright side of a certain place, but some rural areas in Gansu are in great need of help and lead into the topic.

Step 2: Pre-reading

Ask students to read the title of this passage together and predict the main idea of the reading material according to the topic.

Step 3: While-reading

1. Extensive reading

Read the passage for the students, and ask them to check their prediction of the main idea of the passage. Then invite one student to share his/ her prediction.

2. Intensive reading

Let the students read the passage for the second time within 5 minutes. Encourage students to read word by word to search the detailed information. Then ask them to answer two questions:

Q1: What problems does Yang Lei face in Gansu Province?

Q2: What is Yang Lei’s opinion towards this volunteer experience?

Then lead students to fill in the chart on the blackboard. Check the answers together with students.

3. Ask students to read the passage aloud and pay attention to the intonation and pronunciation.

Step 4: Post-reading

Ask students to discuss what the pupils’ life would be afterwards in groups of four and encourage students to be creative. 5 minutes are given for discussion. Then invite some groups to share their opinions. Positive feedbacks will be given to them.

Step 5: Summary and Homework

Summary: make a summary about today’s lesson with students. Ask them to help the people in need.

Homework: ask students to design a poster of helping others and hold an exhibition next class for students to share and introduce their posters.

第一,在热身导入环节,我会通过新颖的教学方法加入一些寓教于乐的内容,这些方法包括视频,图片,音乐和游戏。通过这些教学方法,学生的注意力能被马上吸引过来,更利于后续课堂的开展。
